Social norms. What are they now and how is it different from years ago?
In my mid-30s, I have long gone from my childhood and those "carefree" stages in my life... Since I have been in the working society for about 15 years, I have already lost touch with the younger generations. What's their trends, lingos they used, the common ideologies & etc? - I have no idea at all.
I attended Soka's commemorative meeting (5.3) which only involves leaders as my culture group was given the opportunity to perform at the start of the meeting. I was kind of surprised with the sharing from one of the youth division leaders that members approaching them were facing challenging with social norms. In my era, I don't recall my friends or classmates around me showing signs of that. I am aware I have friends who were really shy, but they still mingle around and have their own clique of friends. Hmm, how backward is our society that making the younger ones felt so insecure? Or is it they are not given enough useful resources to help them to navigate? What are the parents' beliefs now when they educate their children? I feel kind of sorry to the younger generation who are feeling it at this moment, cause I was leading a happy childhood in my days... and it should be the same for them too! My family is not well to do, the only expensive item we purchased was a laptop when my elder sister has to have one when she started poly. Despite our financial limitation, it did not stopped us from doing what we wanted to. I just did and hardly has to consider what others may think of me, cause I can justify my own actions.
This morning I came across this article about a teenager in Korea was killed in a random attacker by a 24 years old suspect. The investigation ruled that both were strangers. Why? Why is this happening so frequently these days... It reminded me of the meeting I attended, and I felt that the struggle from the youngsters is real and is happening now. I am not an extrovert, I also very shy with people who I rarely interact with. And even people who I knew, sometimes I tend to choose to avoid them from engaging in an conversation. But I am fortunate because I do not think that social norms is affecting my daily activities. Is there something that we or I can do to help? It's something I would really think about it.
